Interproximal cavities are the damage to the side walls of the teeth by a carious process. It can occur in any part of the dentition. Early pathology diagnosis allows for quickly and safely restoring the tooth’s health, preventing complications.

Interproximal Cavities: before and after

The visual appearance of interproximal cavities before treatment depends on the severity of enamel destruction. Therefore, one of the characteristics is localization. There are the following types:

  1. Initial cavities when the patient cannot recognize the presence of pathology.
  2. A surface one, with the short-term pain due to the irritants action.
  3. Dentin cavities formed in the upper layer of dentin.
  4. A severe one, accompanied by constant pain.
  5. Pulpitis is characterized by tooth decay and acute pain.

 When examining a patient, a dentist more often detects the first two types. The symptom of the pathology is a violation of the enamel structure. With dentin and severe caries, a person can feel discomfort when eating cold and hot food. A person can recognize the signs of the disease. To avoid complications like pulpitis, it is crucial to carry out treatment on time.

 After the treatment of severe dental cavities, hypersensitivity is a typical syndrome. Within a few days, unusual sensations may occur at the decay site. The concerns are throbbing pain, overbite, and discomfort when biting. If you find such symptoms, you should consult a doctor.

Interproximal Cavities on Anterior Teeth

Cavities between the front teeth can develop at any age. Infection occurs gradually. First, one wall is exposed. If untreated, the infection destroys all surrounding tissues.

 Caries between the front teeth occur for many reasons.

  1. Poor hygiene and irregular oral care.
  2. Poor diet without the necessary vitamins and minerals.
  3. Change in microflora and increased level of acidity.
  4. Unavailability of proper cleaning due to crowding of teeth.
  5. The microcracks as a result of mechanical damage.

The teeth begin to discolor; the color becomes dull. Further on, there is bad breath. A person can feel pain when eating cold and hot food.

 The dentist determines the degree of decay during the examination and additional research methods.

Initial dental cavities appear as white spots. They differ slightly in the shade from the color of the enamel. Therefore, the symptom may not be noticed. However, patients often complain of a feeling of soreness. It occurs when eating sweet or sour foods.

The dentist can restore the quality of the enamel at the initial stage. For this, a two-stage therapy is carried out. First, professional cleaning is performed. Then a dentist specialist applies medication containing fluorine, potassium, calcium and other minerals.

Сavities usually begin to develop in the cervical zone of the front teeth. In this place, the enamel is fragile, and the area is affected much faster. Therefore, it is essential to diagnose the disease in time.

How Are Interproximal Cavities Treated?

The treatment time for this type of decay is longer. It affects multiple surfaces at once. This does not affect the order of treating procedures. Standard procedures for restoring dental health include:

  1. Removal of affected tissues.
  2. Surface restoration.
  3. Restoring contact between teeth.

 Pins and tabs are also used with a significant degree of damage to the tooth crown. The material is selected by composition and color. The filling is adjusted according to the bite characteristics.

Gap between Posterior Teeth

A trema can appear between any teeth except for the central incisors.

A diastema, the space between the front teeth, can be as large as six millimeters. Hereditary factors determine the presence of a gap.

A common cause is dental anomalies: teeth misalignment and small size of natural crowns. Bad habits can also provoke its appearance: biting nails, pens, and pencils can become a cause.

The gaps affect not only the appearance but also the function of posterior teeth. Food leftovers can stick between teeth. Distance sometimes gets in the way of good oral care. There are different methods of treatment:

  1. Aesthetic restoration for minor pathologies.
  2. Placement of plates, trainers and other devices for correction.
  3. Braces can reduce even large interdental spaces.
  4. Aligners can close gaps and correct other pathologies.
  5. Veneers and lumineers are used to fix front teeth.

Sometimes, after successful completion of treatment, a relapse is possible. It can happen due to non-compliance with the doctor’s recommendations. Therefore, it is essential to prevent gap formation due to bad habits in childhood.

Hidden Cavities

Hidden cavities do not bother the patient for a long time. External signs, acute pain and other symptoms may be completely absent. In the initial stage, only a dentist can diagnose the pathology. Visually, cavities appear after the destruction of the entire layer of the tooth crown. Then there are severe symptoms:

  • dark brown spots;
  • sharp pain that gets worse at night;
  • discomfort when eating;
  • bad breath;
  • chips on the teeth.

Hidden cavities often appear in the area of fissures. The grooves on the surface are difficult to reach when cleaning; therefore, they are a good place for infection to accumulate.

Is it Possible to Miss Hidden Cavities?

The main feature is the destruction of the tooth from the inside, not the outside. Pathology can develop in the inner layers for years but does not manifest itself in any way. It is also difficult to diagnose if it occurs in the interdental space.

The dentist discovers hidden caries and finds out the nature of their formation. It is almost impossible to detect pathology on your own. However, you should pay more attention to the following areas:

  • fissures;
  • root areas;
  • zones of crowding;
  • back walls;
  • cracks, tremas and diastemas;

Diseases are easier to prevent than to face in a severe stage. Therefore, choosing a healthy diet and monitoring oral hygiene are essential.

 How to Tell If You Have Hidden Cavities?

Symptoms of cavities formation are similar. If you have complaints, you should consult a doctor. Only accurate diagnostic methods can determine the nature of the disease.

Hidden caries in the severe stage are characterized by bad breath, pain, sensitivity, and cavities. The doctor starts with a visual examination. Mirrors and a probe help detect the blackening area. In case this method is not effective, an x-ray is chosen. It shows the slightest darkening.

Why Do Cavities Appear Inside A Tooth?

One of the most common causes is poor hygiene. Stiff brushes can damage the teeth. Abrasive particles in some kinds of toothpaste can also lead to this. Hidden cavities may appear due to:

  • genetic predisposition;
  • mechanical damage;
  • surface contact with chemicals;
  • structural features of the jaw.

Often, pathology develops due to a lack of vitamins. Fluorine, calcium and other macronutrients are essential for healthy teeth. In addition, it is recommended to regularly eat fish, green vegetables, dried apricots, beans, and nuts.
